Ugg Boots in the UK: Are they real

By Jody North

Ugg boots. Aussie souvenir gifts, winter sheepskin footwear, trendy Aussie sheepskin boots. Call them what you will, they are the fashion accessory you won't ever grow away from, that you'll wear a lot more than your trustworthy faded denim jeans, and that also your feet will adore you for.

So what are ugg boots, and why are they getting so popular around the world? Just in case you've been dwelling under a rock and haven't got a pair, here is a quick history of the Aussie fashion trend that is ugg boots.

The exact history of how these types of Aussie winter sheepskin boots came about is lost in the mists of time. What's known is that they've been worn by Aussies since European settlers first arrived on the large island continent and discovered that their cold feet could best be warmed up by sheepskin footwear. Whoever the very first person ended up being to don a pair, he or she began an Aussie style trend that is perpetually enduring.

Australians adore the out of doors lifestyle, and Australian surfers and seaside lovers were putting on winter sheepskin footwear for well over 50 years on the beach front, as a way of retaining their feet warm whilst out of the sea.

The brand uggs comes from that famous Australian custom of adoringly abbreviating every common usage term, and it was just a quick skip from "ugly boots" to seriously "ugg boots". Ugly since they were perceived at that time when compared with more common footwear, there is no beating these Australian uggs boots for warmth and luxury.

Until recent times, Aussie ugg boots, or "Australian uggs" since they're sometimes endearingly referred to, were one of many world's greatest kept secrets, used by those in the know down under. The way the rest of the world began getting into on the action is almost disputed, but probably the most typically held beliefs is that they were popularised by Baywatch star, Pamela Anderson, when she kept her toes warm on set by putting on some Aussie uggs. Ever since then, a large number of people around the world have purchased pairs of ugg boots, whether it be as Australian memorabilia gifts, style statement, or most commonly, for their genuine coziness and pleasure.

If uggs can become as synonymous with the Aussie way of life and culture as other Australian symbols such as the kangaroo, the didgeridoo and Vegemite sandwiches is to be seen, but one thing is for sure, this is one Australian lifestyle accessory that the rest of the planet is supporting as much as Aussies do.
